The North Korean government has established a new hacker group called "Research Center 227." This division will operate within the country's main intelligence agency, the General Reconnaissance Bureau (RGB). Its goal is to develop hacking technologies and software for offensive purposes.
According to a source in North Korea cited by the Daily NK news agency, this new division will focus on researching Western cybersecurity systems and computer networks. This will enhance the country’s ability to steal digital assets. Additionally, the center will develop artificial intelligence-based data theft techniques and respond to information from North Korean hacker groups operating abroad.
In recent years, North Korean hackers have targeted cryptocurrency exchanges and international companies, stealing large sums of money. One of the latest examples is the theft of $1.4 billion worth of funds from the Bybit platform.
The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have previously accused North Korea’s General Reconnaissance Bureau (RGB) of conducting cyberattacks and espionage activities. The newly created Research Center 227 aims to expand these activities further.
