The Pentagon is preparing an alternative to Anthropic

The US Department of Defense – the Pentagon – has begun working on new artificial intelligence tools as an alternative to the Anthropic company, which has been in disagreement over ethical restrictions.

Cameron Stanley, head of the Pentagon’s Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, said that the agency has already started developing local artificial intelligence systems to reduce dependence on Anthropic technologies. According to him, work is also underway to integrate several large language models (LLM) into secure environments under state control.

According to reports, the termination of the $ 200 million contract between the parties is due to serious disagreements over the use of artificial intelligence for military purposes. Anthropic demanded that its technologies not be used in mass surveillance systems or autonomous weapons that operate without human intervention. The Pentagon did not accept these conditions.

Against the background of the events, the Pentagon is focused on new partnerships. The agency has begun cooperation with OpenAI, and also reached an agreement to use the Grok model developed by Elon Musk’s xAI company in secret systems.

The tension didn’t end there. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has classified Anthropic as a “supply chain risk.” The decision has also led to the company severing ties with other agencies working with the Pentagon.

In response, Anthropic has filed a lawsuit to lift the restrictions. Recent events suggest that the US military is more interested in agile AI solutions with full control than in conforming to ethical constraints.
