This investment will be used to expand the company’s data center in Saudi Arabia and increase the delivery of artificial intelligence chips there.
Groq was founded in 2016 by former Google engineers Jonathan Ross and Douglas Wightman. The company produces specialized integrated circuits, such as the Language Processing Unit (LPU), to accelerate artificial intelligence workloads.
Based in California, Groq manufactures artificial intelligence chips that run pretrained models and optimize speed. These chips have previously received investment from companies such as Tiger Global Management, D1 Capital Partners, and BlackRock Private Equity Partners.
The company will receive 1.5 billion dollars in investment to expand its existing data center in Dammam by signing an agreement with Aramco Digital, a subsidiary of Saudi Aramco. The investment was announced at Saudi Arabia's LEAP 2025 global technology event. The Dammam data center will also host Allam, an artificial intelligence language model that operates in both Arabic and English.
