The U.S. government is in talks to acquire a stake in Intel

According to Bloomberg, the U.S. government is reportedly in talks to take a stake in chipmaker Intel. The move is intended to support the company’s expansion of manufacturing capabilities in the U.S., including its long-delayed Ohio chip factory project.

The news comes less than a week after President Donald Trump demanded the resignation of Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan. While Trump did not provide a specific reason, the demand followed Republican Senator Tom Cotton sending a letter to Intel’s board regarding Tan’s alleged ties to China.

CEO Tan met with the Trump administration on August 11 to address the government’s concerns and explore ways for the company to collaborate with the administration. According to Bloomberg, this meeting prompted discussions about the U.S. government taking a direct stake in Intel.

Intel has declined to comment on the matter.

An Intel spokesperson said:
“Intel remains committed to supporting President Trump’s efforts to strengthen U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership. We look forward to continuing our work with the Trump Administration to advance these shared priorities, but we will not comment on rumors or speculation.”
