US intelligence expands purchase of commercial satellite radar imagery

The U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) has signed new contracts with Capella Space, ICEYE U.S., and Umbra to expand the availability of commercial satellite radar imagery.

The contracts aim to increase the use of commercial satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology, which can provide images of the Earth’s surface day and night and in almost all weather conditions.

The new program will allow government agencies to order radar images in real time, access archived images, and use analytical data. In addition, the NRO plans to develop new surveillance and intelligence capabilities with commercial companies.

The agency says that integrating commercial SAR satellites with national reconnaissance satellites will expand global surveillance capabilities, enhance continuous surveillance, and provide more agile intelligence.

This step is a continuation of the NRO’s strategy to expand the use of commercial space technologies, which began in 2022. The agency believes that cooperation with the private sector contributes to the faster implementation of new technologies and the increase in the capabilities of state satellite systems.
