French mobile apps and games developer Voodoo has acquired BeReal. Under the terms of the deal, BeReal co-founder and CEO Alexis Barreiat will leave the company after a transition period. The social network will be headed by Emeric Roffe, CEO of Wizz (one of the Voodoo programs).
Chief executive Alexander Yazdi told the Financial Times that Voodoo plans to create advertising supplements on BeReal to make the company profitable. Voodoo also wants to increase the number of active users of the service. As of the end of 2022, BeReal's number of active users remained around 50 million, but the number of downloads fell to 5 from a peak of 35 million in the third quarter of 2022.
BeReal was founded in 2019. On the social network, users must upload a picture taken with the main and front cameras of their smartphones to the platform once a day. Photos cannot be edited. Users are prompted to take a photo for two minutes at different times every day. No likes. According to Voodoo, BeReal's main audience is in the US, France and Japan. Moreover, half of the users in these countries use the app at least six days a week.
