WeTransfer co-founder launches new file-sharing platform

Nalden, one of the co-founders of WeTransfer, created a new file transfer platform, Boomerang, after being dissatisfied with the recent development of the popular file sharing service WeTransfer. The new service allows you to send files without opening an account, emphasizing simplicity and user experience.

Nalden said that with the Boomerang project, he aims to restore the simple and fast file sharing experience. Note that WeTransfer was founded in 2009 by Nalden, Rinke Visser and Bas Beerens and quickly gained popularity on a global scale for transferring large files. The platform was acquired by Milan-based Bending Spoons in 2024.

After the acquisition, WeTransfer underwent a number of changes. These included new rules regarding transfer links, the reduction of a large number of employees and controversial conditions that user content could be used for artificial intelligence models. Although the clause in question was later withdrawn, Nalden noted that these changes damaged the core philosophy of the product.

Boomerang allows users to transfer files without email confirmation or registration. The free version offers 1 GB of total storage and a 1 GB file limit, with shares remaining active for 7 days. For €6.99 per month, users who open an account can take advantage of 3 GB of storage, access to file history and additional features.

The premium package offers extensive features such as 200 GB per folder, 500 GB of total storage, a 5 GB file size limit, password protection and file retention for up to 90 days.

It will become clearer in the near future how Boomerang’s user-centric and minimalist approach will position itself in the file sharing tools market.
