In the first quarter of 2026, the volume of money sent from Ireland to Azerbaijan reached $24.6 million. According to the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, this indicator increased 7.8 times compared to the same period last year. Thus, Ireland became the third country sending the most money to Azerbaijan after Russia and Turkey.
At first glance, this statistic seems unusual. Because Ireland is not one of the countries with large labor migration from Azerbaijan. According to the research of Tech.az Media, the main reason for the increase may be related to the digital economy and global technology platforms rather than individual remittances.
As is known, legal entities and regional centers of Google, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, X and other large technology companies in Europe are mainly registered in Ireland. Numerous individual entrepreneurs, marketing agencies, content creators, programmers and digital service exporters operating in Azerbaijan earn income through these platforms.
For example, Google advertising revenue, YouTube monetization, app sales, partnerships on Meta platforms, as well as various international digital service payments are often made through companies registered in Ireland. For this reason, Ireland appears in the statistics as the source country of funds.
In other words, the main reason for the increase in statistics may not be the increase in the number of Azerbaijanis moving to Ireland, but the increase in income earned by individuals selling digital services abroad from Azerbaijan or collaborating with global technology platforms.
This trend can also be seen as an important signal that Azerbaijan's digital economy is expanding, and local specialists and companies are starting to earn more income through global platforms.
