Wikipedia bans articles written by artificial intelligence

Wikipedia has banned the use of artificial intelligence in article writing under a new policy adopted by its volunteer community of editors. The decision, announced on March 27, 2026, explicitly and categorically prohibits the use of large language models (LLMs) to generate or rewrite content.

While there have been vague statements on the issue before, the latest change has tightened the rules. The long-debated decision was passed by a large majority in a community vote — 40 in favor and 2 against.

However, the platform has not banned artificial intelligence entirely. Under the new rules, editors can only use artificial intelligence to make basic corrections and receive editing suggestions on their own texts. However, the artificial intelligence is not allowed to add new information to the text, and all changes must be carefully reviewed by a human.

The platform’s management has warned editors against AI errors, especially known as “hallucinations.” It was noted that artificial intelligence can sometimes go beyond the task, changing the content of the text and creating false information that is not confirmed by sources.
