WordPress, one of the world’s most popular website-building platforms, has announced the formation of an official AI team to enhance the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. As an open-source platform used by millions of people, WordPress serves a wide range of purposes — from simple blogs to complex websites for large enterprises.
The newly established team is set to guide and manage the development of AI-based products within WordPress’ open-source developer community in a more structured and goal-oriented manner.
The team includes James LePage, who leads AI at Automattic (WordPress’ parent company), Felix Arntz and Pascal Birchler from Google, as well as Jeff Paul, Director of Open Source at the web design firm 10up.
In a blog post, WordPress Executive Director Mary Hubbard highlighted the importance of the initiative:
“A unified team stewards AI development thoughtfully, avoids fragmentation, and ensures alignment with the long-term goals of WordPress.”
Currently, there are over 660 AI plugins available on the WordPress platform. The most widely used plugins include AI-powered template builders, SEO optimization tools, and chatbots. This indicates a growing interest in AI technologies among the WordPress community and reflects the fertile ground for further innovation in this area.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in WordPress’ aim to play a central role in the future of AI-driven web development.
