Xiaomi smartphones will be sold with a crypto wallet

Starting next year, Xiaomi plans to equip the majority of its smartphones sold globally—with the exception of China and the U.S.—with the pre-installed Sei Wallet crypto wallet.

According to the publication "Gizmochina," the company has signed a global partnership agreement with Sei Labs to accelerate the mass adoption of blockchain technologies.

The Sei Wallet, designed for transactions with digital assets, operates on the first-layer Sei blockchain. This application will allow users to make P2P payments, access decentralized services, and explore the Web3 environment without downloading additional software.

Additionally, Sei Labs intends to implement a stablecoin payment system in over 20,000 Xiaomi stores. In the first phase, the project will launch in Hong Kong and several European countries, allowing buyers to purchase Xiaomi products with stablecoins such as USDC.

The company believes this collaboration could serve as the first introduction to cryptocurrencies for millions of users, especially in markets where Xiaomi is strong, such as India and Greece.

However, experts approach the matter with some skepticism. Xiaomi has previously been criticized for preloading unnecessary apps that most users never used. Although the company has moved away from this policy in recent years, the new agreement with Sei Labs is seen by some as a return to old habits.
