OpenAI and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have signed a seven-year strategic partnership worth $38 billion. Under the agreement, OpenAI will immediately begin using AWS infrastructure and hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs to develop both current and future artificial intelligence models.
Following the announcement, Amazon’s stock rose by 5%, reaching $256.5 per share. As CNBC noted, this marks OpenAI’s first major deal with AWS, the leader in the cloud computing market. The move signals OpenAI’s intention to reduce its technological dependence on Microsoft. Previously, an exclusive contract with Microsoft prevented OpenAI from partnering with Amazon, but that agreement is no longer in effect.
The $38 billion deal represents only a fraction of OpenAI’s planned infrastructure spending. According to the Financial Times, contracts signed in September–October 2025 with companies such as Oracle, Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom are expected to total around $1 trillion over the next decade. CEO Sam Altman has stated that total infrastructure agreements could reach $1.4 trillion.
Interestingly, Amazon also maintains close ties with one of OpenAI’s main competitors, Anthropic — the developer of the Claude chatbot. Amazon has invested $8 billion in Anthropic and is building an $11 billion dedicated data center in Indiana to support the company’s needs. However, Anthropic’s decision to expand its partnership with Google in October 2025 has raised some investor doubts about whether it will fully leverage Amazon’s capabilities.
In October 2025, OpenAI also completed an internal restructuring, dividing the company into two entities: the non-profit OpenAI Foundation and the commercial OpenAI Group. The Foundation oversees the commercial branch and holds a 26% stake valued at approximately $130 billion, while Microsoft’s share is estimated at $135 billion. According to Reuters, following the restructuring, OpenAI is also considering the possibility of launching an initial public offering (IPO) in the future.
