Anthropic has announced that it has acquired Bun, the company that created the technology designed to accelerate the execution of JavaScript programs. The main goal of this acquisition is to further strengthen the company’s AI-powered coding platform, Claude Code.
Launched in May 2025, the Claude Code platform reportedly reached an annual revenue run rate of 1 billion dollars within six months. According to Anthropic, the integration of Bun’s technology will significantly enhance Claude Code’s overall performance and reliability.
Founded in 2021 by Jarred Sumner, Bun is currently used by major companies such as Midjourney and receives over 7 million downloads per month. The company views this move as part of its strategy to expand its technical capabilities for AI-supported software development. Bun will remain open-source and MIT-licensed even after the acquisition.
Anthropic’s claim of a 1-billion-dollar annual revenue run rate has not yet been independently verified. With its market rival GitHub Copilot reporting a 55% increase in developer productivity, these numbers add to the uncertainty of the competitive landscape.
Technically, Bun offers data throughput up to four times faster than the widely used Node.js system. It also reduces processing times in CPU-intensive tasks from 3.4 seconds to 1.7 seconds. However, its ultimate success will depend on whether Bun’s command-line-centric approach can outperform competitors that are more deeply integrated with GitHub.
Bun’s technology maintains high compatibility with Node.js.
