US artificial intelligence company Anthropic has expanded its operations in the field of biotechnology by acquiring the startup Coefficient Bio for about $400 million.
Founded by Samuel Stanton and Nathan Frey in New York City just eight months ago, Coefficient Bio has been operating in secret. The company has announced that it aims to make drug development processes more efficient through artificial intelligence.
Both founders previously worked in the Prescient Design team at Genentech and gained experience in the field of computational drug discovery.
All employees of Coefficient Bio, which has a team of about 10 people, will join Anthropic's healthcare and life sciences division after the acquisition. The move is seen as part of the company's strategy to expand the application areas of artificial intelligence.
