Couple's marriage in the Netherlands declared invalid due to ChatGPT

A court in the Netherlands has annulled a couple's marriage certificate after their wedding speech was prepared using ChatGPT. The Independent reports this, citing a court decision.

According to the report, the person who registered the marriage at the wedding gave a speech during the ceremony that did not comply with the requirements of the Dutch Civil Code. The speech did not contain mandatory statements about the future spouses "accepting each other as husband and wife" and conscientiously fulfilling their family obligations, as stipulated by law.

According to the Civil Code, a marriage is not legally valid without this statement. Although court documents indicate that the speech was written using ChatGPT, the couple denied this, saying that their friends simply checked the text for legal compliance with artificial intelligence.

The couple's wedding took place in April 2025. The Overijssel provincial court officially declared the marriage invalid in January 2026.
