In the European Union, there will be an agency that oversees the work of Telegram

The European Union is developing a new mechanism to control the work of the Telegram messenger. This time, the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications (BIPT) will play the role of regulator.
The Belgian publication "De Standaart" reports that this decision was made due to the increase in drug trade carried out through messengers. BIPT will soon receive official Authorized Body status, which is expected to happen a few days after publication in the Official Gazette. As Jimmy Smedts, a spokesman for the service, noted, after this happens, the institute will be able to exercise effective control over Telegram's activities.
The selection of BIPT as the messenger regulator is due to the fact that Telegram's European representative is the Belgian company EDSR. The institute will carry out supervisory functions under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), which regulates the moderation of illegal content on platforms.
In addition to Telegram, the European Commission has announced increased monitoring of 18 other online services since late August. The list includes the 17 largest online platforms covered by DSA and the two largest online search engines. This list is based on user data provided by the services through February 17, 2023.
According to the DSA, services with more than 45 million active users face fines of up to 6% of a company's global turnover for violating the law.
