Meta Expands in India Despite Recent Layoffs
Last month, Meta announced plans to cut 5% of its workforce, controversially labeling them as “low performers.” However, these layoffs are not stopping the company from expanding in certain regions.
Meta is opening a new hub in Bengaluru, India's tech capital. Several Meta employees have shared this news on LinkedIn this month. According to the company’s careers page, Meta is currently hiring for 41 positions in Bengaluru. These job openings, posted over the past month, primarily focus on software development, machine learning engineering, and chip design for Meta’s data centers. Meta is looking for an “experienced Engineering Director” in India to build and lead its engineering team. A job listing posted three weeks ago on LinkedIn states that the role involves team-building and developing a strategic vision for engineering teams in India.
The new hub is part of Meta’s Enterprise Engineering team, which focuses on internal tools rather than Meta’s well-known products like Facebook and Instagram.
Meta already has multiple offices in India, including in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, New Delhi, and Mumbai. However, most of the open positions at these locations are in non-engineering fields. According to Meta’s careers page, only one of the 12 available positions at these offices is related to engineering.
A Meta spokesperson in India confirmed to TechCrunch that the company is hiring for a “small number of engineering positions in Bengaluru.”
“We regularly update our location strategies to support our long-term investments,” the spokesperson said.
The 41 positions in Bengaluru are a small fraction of Meta’s global job postings, which currently exceed 1,700. However, this shift suggests that Meta is increasingly positioning India as an engineering hub, a role historically dominated by North America and Europe.
In one notable case from 2022, an Indian software engineer made headlines after being laid off by Meta just two days after relocating to Canada for the job.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that the company plans to backfill jobs lost during its most recent round of layoffs.
