US technology giant Meta has announced that it has begun construction on a new data center in Oklahoma to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure. The project is estimated to cost more than $1 billion.
According to the company, more than 1,000 jobs will be created during the construction phase, and about 100 permanent jobs will be provided once the center is operational.
The facility will be Meta’s first data center in Oklahoma and its 28th in the United States. The company also said that it will cover all water and sewer costs for the project.
With this move, Meta joins other major technology companies in investing heavily in data centers to increase the computing power required for AI. At the same time, concerns about the energy consumption of such projects are growing.
