Neuralink is looking for volunteers for its brain chips

The company is searching for and conducting research on patients who are paralyzed. The research is expected to last approximately six years. On September 19, 2023, Neuralink obtained permission from an independent research board and began searching for volunteers. Individuals aged 22 and above, who are paralyzed due to spinal cord injuries or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, can apply if they are U.S. citizens. The company has not specified the number of participants in the research.

The company will conduct trials of a brain-computer interface (BCI), which will help paralyzed individuals control external devices with their thoughts. Neuralink will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the implant, the R1 surgical robot, and the N1 application that deciphers brain signals and sends commands to other devices.

Participants will have their travel expenses covered for examinations. The full research is expected to last approximately six years. After the surgery, Neuralink specialists will monitor the patient's "progress and ensure the chip is functioning." Over a five-year period, 20 check-ups are planned.

Prior to this, the technology was tested on monkeys and pigs. In December 2022, Reuters reported that U.S. authorities had launched an investigation into Neuralink over allegations of cruelty to animals.
