Wirth received his PhD in electrical engineering in computer science in 1963. After that, he was an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University for four years, and a professor of computer science at the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) from 1967 to 1999. During his teaching tenure, he took two one-year leaves of absence to work at Xerox PARC Research and Development.
Nikolaus Wirth created the Pascal programming language in 1970, and he is also the author of Euler, PL360, ALGOL W, Modula, and Oberon. In 1984, the scientist became the laureate of the most prestigious prize in the field of computer science - the Turing prize.
