OpenAI has announced the acquisition of the popular technology talk show TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network), in what is considered the company’s first major acquisition in the media sector.
TBPN is a three-hour live program that airs daily on YouTube and X platforms, covering topics such as technology, business, artificial intelligence and defense. The show is hosted by former technology entrepreneurs John Coogan and Jordi Hays.
TBPN, which has gained a large audience in Silicon Valley, is known as a platform for open and honest discussions between industry leaders. The program often features prominent executives such as Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, Marc Benioff and Sam Altman.
After the acquisition, TBPN will continue to operate under its own brand and report to a team led by Chris Lehane. The company’s management said that the program will maintain editorial independence and that decisions such as guest selection and topic selection will continue to be made by TBPN.
Fidji Simo noted that TBPN's strong communications and marketing skills are important to OpenAI, and this partnership will help it better explain the impact of artificial intelligence on people's daily lives.
However, some experts have highlighted the potential conflict of interest in the acquisition. As OpenAI prepares for an IPO, the acquisition of a media platform that often discusses the company itself and its competitors raises questions.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a post on social media that the deal will not change TBPN's critical approach: "I don't think they will be any softer on us."
TBPN sees the move as a way to gain greater influence and aims to contribute to a better understanding of artificial intelligence technologies globally.
