OpenAI has raised the weekly query limit for the “thinking” GPT-5 model from 200 to 3,000 for Plus subscribers. The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, announced on X that soon all users will have higher query limits for this and other models than before the release of GPT-5.
Since August 7, 2025, non-subscribers were limited to one query per day in the GPT-5 Thinking mode. Now, non-subscribers have access to GPT-5 Thinking Mini, which offers higher query limits than before.
Additionally, OpenAI plans to provide Plus subscribers with a small monthly quota of queries to the GPT-5 Pro “thinking” model, which is currently available only to Pro plan users paying $200 per month.
These changes come as more users are opting to use the “thinking” mode. Among free users, the share of queries in this mode has grown from 1% to 7%, while among Plus subscribers it increased from 7% to 24%.
Sam Altman also noted that all paid subscribers can switch back to the previous GPT-4o model if they wish.
Users can now see which model handled their request by hovering over the icon in ChatGPT. To activate the “thinking” version, users need to ask the model to “think over the answer.” There is also a “Get Quick Answer” button, which activates the base GPT-5 model.
