OpenAI has announced plans to build five new artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in the U.S. in partnership with Oracle and SoftBank as part of its “Stargate” project. The combined capacity of these centers will be 7 gigawatts, enough to meet the electricity needs of more than 5 million homes.
Three of the five centers will be developed in collaboration with Oracle and will be located in Shekelford, Texas, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, and an undisclosed location in the Midwest. The remaining two centers will be built with SoftBank in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas.
This project is part of OpenAI’s broader effort to build large-scale infrastructure to train and deploy more powerful AI models. Recently, OpenAI also announced it had secured a $100 billion investment to purchase AI processors from Nvidia and to expand its data center network.
