OpenAI partners with Broadcom to develop AI processor

OpenAI has entered a strategic partnership with U.S. chip manufacturer Broadcom to develop its first proprietary artificial intelligence processor. The move aims to meet the rapidly growing demand for AI computing power and reduce the company’s reliance on external suppliers such as Nvidia and AMD.

Under this collaboration, OpenAI will design the new AI chips, while Broadcom will begin developing and deploying them starting from the second half of 2026. The processors are expected to be fully rolled out by the end of 2029. Moreover, the partnership extends beyond chip manufacturing to include a broader technological collaboration encompassing Broadcom’s Ethernet and networking equipment.

The planned total capacity of the project is estimated at 10 gigawatts — equivalent to the energy consumption of over 8 million U.S. homes. Following the announcement, Broadcom’s shares rose by about 7% during the same trading day. With this initiative, OpenAI joins the ranks of companies like Google and Amazon, which are developing their own AI chips. The company recently signed a 6 GW supply agreement with AMD and has reportedly been in talks with Nvidia for potential investments worth up to $100 billion.

OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman described the partnership as “a critical step in building the infrastructure required to unlock the potential of artificial intelligence and deliver real benefits to people and businesses.” Broadcom President and CEO Hock Tan called it “a significant turning point in the pursuit of AI,” expressing excitement about jointly developing next-generation accelerators and network systems with 10-gigawatt capacity. OpenAI co-founder and President Greg Brockman added that developing their own chips would allow the company to “integrate what we learn from building advanced models and products directly into the hardware,” unlocking “new levels of capability and intelligence.”
