OpenAI will launch its first “smart” device this year

OpenAI plans to launch its first AI-powered device in the second half of 2026, the company’s global policy chief Chris Lehane said at the Axios House conference in Davos. According to him, this date is “the most realistic” option, but the presentation time can be changed.

Lehane called the “devices” direction one of the main achievements of OpenAI in 2026. He declined to comment on what form factor the new product will have — a pin, headphones or another device.

In mid-January, an insider nicknamed Smart Pikachu wrote on the X social network, citing sources in the supply chain, that OpenAI is working on headphones that will be an “alternative” to AirPods. This device, internally codenamed Sweetpea, will consist of an egg-shaped case and two “capsules” that are placed behind the ear.

According to the insider, the presentation is scheduled for September 2026. Foxconn is reportedly preparing to produce up to five million devices by the fourth quarter of 2028.

Earlier, in October 2025, the Financial Times, citing sources, wrote that OpenAI was working on a palm-sized, screen-less device. This device would be able to respond to user requests by receiving sound and visual signals. It is likely that this could be a “smart” speaker. Similar information was previously published by The Information.

It is noted that OpenAI is developing this device in collaboration with famous designer Jony Ive. After leaving Apple in 2019, Ive founded a design studio called LoveFrom. In July 2025, OpenAI acquired his startup called Io for $6.5 billion.
