Perplexity has announced that its AI-powered web browser “Comet” is now completely free for all users. Previously, the browser was only available to Perplexity Max subscribers who paid $200 per month.
The company noted that millions of people had signed up for Comet’s waitlist. In response to this overwhelming interest, Perplexity has removed the waitlist entirely and emphasized that the browser will remain free forever.
Comet uses Perplexity AI as its default search engine. An AI assistant is embedded in the browser’s sidebar and responds to every query. Users can ask the assistant questions, request text summaries, draft emails, or even get navigation guidance. The browser gathers information from the web and enhances it with AI-generated answers.
Free users also gain access to additional features such as Discover (news recommendations), Shopping (price comparisons), and Travel (trip information).
For $5 per month, users can upgrade to Comet Plus, while Pro and Max subscribers, at $20 per month, receive access to more advanced AI models, image and video generation, and other premium features.
Perplexity’s bold move is widely seen as an attempt to strengthen its position against giants like Google Chrome and Opera.
