India-based financial technology company PhonePe has launched the 'Indus AppStore Developer Platform', an alternative to the Google Play Store. PhonePe's new platform promises to offer huge benefits to developers by charging no commissions for in-app purchases and zero platform fees. This new initiative by PhonePe aims to offer Indian app developers localized features like local language support and phone number based login system.
This strategy is seen as an attempt to challenge Google's market dominance in India. PhonePe also aims to further help Indian developers by ensuring that apps on the platform are supported with more native features. It said that PhonePe will not charge any listing fee for the first year and will continue to provide services at a nominal price thereafter.
