Threads has overtaken X in terms of daily active users (DAU) on mobile devices. According to Similarweb, TechCrunch reports that as of January 7, 2026, Threads had approximately 141.5 million daily active users across iOS and Android, compared to 125 million for X.
However, X still leads Threads in the US, but the gap is gradually closing. At the same time, Threads has almost no significant presence on the web version. X’s web version is used by approximately 150 million users daily.
Threads’ growing popularity in recent months is associated with continuous development and is not related to the scandal surrounding the Grok chatbot. Ad support in the Meta ecosystem, a focus on content creators, and the rapid introduction of new features are cited as the main reasons for the growth.
According to the results of 2025, Threads took second place in the list of the most popular free applications in the US App Store, after ChatGPT.
