Invest Qatar and US-based WHOOP have announced the opening of a new international performance lab in Doha. The project will be located in Qatar’s Msheireb Downtown Doha innovation hub, and will be an international counterpart to the company’s main R&D center in Boston.
The new WHOOP Labs Doha center will become a regional hub for research, data collection, and technological innovation in human health and performance. The initiative is a significant step in Qatar’s goal of building a knowledge-based, technology-driven economy.
WHOOP founder and CEO Will Ahmed said the new center will play a key role in expanding the company’s global mission:
“WHOOP Labs Doha is a significant milestone in our mission to help people unlock their potential and live healthier lives. It brings the Boston experience to the global stage.”
The lab will study the climate, lifestyle, and health characteristics of West Asia and the Gulf region, with the data being applied to WHOOP’s wearable technologies.
Ahmed noted that the Gulf market is one of the fastest-growing regions for the company and the new center will help it better tailor its products.
The partnership will also ensure collaboration with local research institutions, training of young professionals and maintaining standards in information security.
Sheikh Ali Al Waleed Al Thani, Chairman of Invest Qatar, stressed that this partnership strengthens Qatar's steps towards leadership in the field of global technology and sports science.
