Apple will allow voice-activated AI chatbots in CarPlay

Apple is preparing to allow the use of third-party voice AI applications on the CarPlay platform in the coming months. According to sources familiar with the matter, this innovation will allow users to contact AI chatbots through the car interface for the first time.

Support for this function is currently being worked on and is expected to be released in the coming months. This step is considered a strategic change for Apple. Until now, the company only allowed the use of its own voice assistant Siri in CarPlay.

After the innovation, artificial intelligence providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google will be able to offer their applications with voice control mode for CarPlay. For example, drivers will be able to ask ChatGPT for restaurant recommendations without taking their hands off the wheel.

However, certain restrictions will remain. Apple will not allow third-party services to replace the button or keyword designed to call Siri in CarPlay. Users will first have to open the corresponding application to activate voice control.

At the same time, developers will be able to set the voice mode to automatically start when the application is opened. In parallel, Apple is also strengthening its own technologies. The company plans to update Siri this year with the “World Knowledge Answers” function. This function will include web search capabilities similar to ChatGPT and tools that provide a summary of online information.
