AWS servers damaged in missile attack

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud services arm of Amazon, said on Sunday that power was temporarily outages at one of its data centers in the United Arab Emirates after objects struck the building.

The United Arab Emirates has been hit by a series of missile and drone attacks by Iran in retaliation for the US and Israeli strikes on Iran. The Iranian strikes have targeted airports, ports and residential areas across the country, as well as the wider Gulf region.

“At approximately 4:30 a.m. Pacific Time, one of our availability zones (mec1-az2) was damaged by objects striking the data center, resulting in sparks and a fire,” AWS said in a statement.

According to the company’s official website, an “Availability Zone” consists of one or more physical data centers. These zones are separate and isolated locations within each AWS region.

Power to the facility was cut off while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

AWS neither confirmed nor denied that the incident was related to the Iranian attacks.

The data center operator said it could take several hours for the affected area to fully restore connectivity. However, other availability zones in the UAE were reported to be operating normally.
