ChatGPT has 100 million weekly active users in India

ChatGPT has reached 100 million weekly active users in India, Sam Altman said on the eve of a government-sponsored AI summit.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in an article in The Times of India, India’s English-language daily, that interest in ChatGPT is growing rapidly in the country. The company is officially participating in the five-day India AI Impact Summit, which began in New Delhi on Monday. Altman attended the summit along with senior executives from the world’s leading AI companies.

According to Altman, India is currently ChatGPT’s second-largest user base after the United States. He noted that according to data as of October 2025, the platform’s global weekly active users have reached 800 million and this figure is expected to approach 900 million.

OpenAI sees the Indian market as one of the key directions in its global expansion strategy. The company opened an office in New Delhi in August 2025 and launched a “ChatGPT Go” package for the price-sensitive market, priced at less than $5. This plan was later made free for Indian users for a year.

Altman also emphasized that students play a key role in the platform’s spread. According to him, India ranks first in the world in the number of students using ChatGPT.

It should be noted that the Indian market has also become a priority for other technology companies. Google introduced a free one-year subscription to its AI Pro plan for Indian students in September 2025. The company’s vice president of education, Chris Phillips, said last month that India is also a global leader in the use of Gemini for educational purposes.

Altman emphasized in his article that India can play a significant role in the large-scale implementation of democratic AI, thanks to accessibility, practical AI literacy and the infrastructure to support widespread adoption.
