Crypto.com has made the most expensive domain purchase ever. According to the Financial Times, founder Kris Marszalek bought the AI.com domain for $70 million. The deal was made entirely in cryptocurrency, with the seller’s identity not disclosed.
The purchase broke previous domain market records. The most expensive domain was CarInsurance.com, which sold for $49.7 million in 2010. It was followed by VacationRentals.com ($35 million, 2007) and Voice.com ($30 million, 2019).
Marszalek plans to launch AI.com during Sunday’s Super Bowl. The site will offer users a personalized AI agent for messaging, using apps, and trading stocks. He said that in the next 10 to 20 years, artificial intelligence will be one of the biggest technological waves of our time.
Marszalek previously acquired the Crypto.com domain and spent $700 million on stadium naming rights. According to domain broker Larry Fisher, there is no alternative to assets like AI.com and such opportunities may not happen again.
