According to new data from analytics firm Sensor Tower, ChatGPT’s growth rate has begun to slow. Nevertheless, OpenAI’s product remains the market leader, accounting for 50% of global mobile downloads and 55% of monthly active users. However, Google’s Gemini chatbot has started to surpass its competitor in terms of downloads, user growth, and time spent in the app.
This trend could help Google narrow the gap with ChatGPT in the future. Recognizing this threat, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently declared a “Code Red” at the company, directing the team to focus on product personalization and reliability improvements.
Between August and November 2025, ChatGPT’s global monthly active users grew by only 6%, reaching approximately 810 million. Analysts attribute this weak growth to the market approaching saturation.
For comparison, during the same period, Google Gemini’s user base grew by 30%. The sharp increase is largely attributed to the launch of the highly anticipated “Nano Banana” model in September.
The report notes that U.S. Android users primarily access Gemini not as a separate app but as an integrated feature of the operating system—usage that is twice as high as the standalone app. Considering Android’s dominance in the global market, this gives Google a significant competitive advantage.
Google and OpenAI are not the only players in the market. Competitors such as Perplexity and Claude also showed triple-digit growth in 2025, with annual increases of 370% and 190%, respectively.
In terms of time spent in the app, Gemini also leads. In November, Gemini users spent an average of 11 minutes per day in the app, a 120% increase compared to March. ChatGPT, on the other hand, remained nearly unchanged, even experiencing a 10% decline in November compared to July.
