According to the Wall Street Journal, SpaceX has begun talks for a secondary share sale, which is expected to raise the company’s valuation to $800 billion. If this plan materializes, SpaceX would surpass OpenAI, currently valued at $500 billion, to become the most valuable private company in the United States. This figure also represents a doubling of the company’s valuation from its recent $400 billion estimate.
These high valuations indicate that large assessments in private markets are becoming more common. For example, competitor Anthropic increased its valuation from $183 billion to $350 billion following recent investments from Microsoft and Nvidia. This trend allows companies to achieve valuations comparable to public markets without going public or facing the pressures of quarterly reporting.
Founded in 2002, SpaceX is currently a global leader in commercial rocket launches. In addition, the company’s satellite internet service, Starlink, is rapidly expanding, with over 8 million users worldwide as of November. The company has not yet issued an official statement regarding the news.
