Meta employees use up home internet for two days with tracking system

An internal system used by Meta to monitor employees' computer activity has led to a sharp increase in home Internet traffic. In some cases, employees say, their monthly Internet quota has been exhausted in just a few days.

We are talking about a program called Model Capability Initiative (MCI), which was revealed in April 2026. The company says that this tool is used to train artificial intelligence models. The system can be activated on work computers and track mouse movements, clicks, keystrokes, and also collect screenshots.

According to a new investigation by Reuters, MCI records activity on more than 200 applications and websites. In addition, the system collects the content of emails and messages received by employees in the United States. This data can even include correspondence with colleagues working abroad.

Meta told Reuters in a statement that the program operates in accordance with the law and its main purpose is to study how users interact with their computers. The company did not provide detailed information about the volume of data collected.

Reuters writes that internal analyses of the company have shown that MCI was able to collect information about employees' code changes, links they opened, information they copied to the clipboard and even when the computer went to sleep. According to experts, this amount of information can make it possible to model employees' work behavior in detail.

The publication notes that Meta's practice may increase the attention of regulatory authorities in the European Union under the GDPR data protection rules.
