Trump announces potential buyers for TikTok

Donald Trump has made new remarks regarding the possible sale of TikTok, the popular short-form video platform of Chinese origin. According to Trump, a group of wealthy investors has been identified to purchase the app, and the process is currently moving forward.

“We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way,” Trump said during an interview with Fox News on Sunday. “I think this sale will probably require approval from China. I believe President Xi Jinping will accept it.”

Trump has refused to disclose the names of the potential buyers at this stage, stating only that they are “very wealthy people.” He added that their identities will be revealed to the public within two weeks—a timeframe he has often used in previous announcements.

It’s worth recalling that Trump took a strong stance against ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, during his presidency. He argued that TikTok posed a threat to U.S. national security, and should therefore either be sold or completely banned in the country.

In early 2024, Trump had proposed the idea of creating a joint venture, in which the U.S. government would own a 50% stake—shared between the existing owners and new investors.

He also previously suggested that his allies, Larry Ellison and Elon Musk, could be among the potential buyers. However, at the current stage, Elon Musk is considered a less likely candidate to be involved in the deal.

While detailed information about the sale remains undisclosed, the future of TikTok continues to be a major topic of discussion in both U.S. tech policy and U.S.–China relations. If the sale proceeds, it could have significant implications for digital security, data sovereignty, and the broader geopolitical landscape.
