Baykar is expanding its field of activity and entering the energy sector. The company, known worldwide for its unmanned aerial vehicles, is now starting the production of nuclear reactors to contribute to the country’s energy independence. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar has shared information about this new project.
According to the minister, Baykar is currently working on Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. The company’s domestically developed 40-megawatt reactor prototype differs from traditional large power plants and is capable of supplying electricity to approximately 100,000 households on its own. This step aims to reduce Turkey’s dependence on foreign countries not only in the defense sector but also in energy technologies.
Baykar’s CEO, Selçuk Bayraktar, had previously emphasized that nuclear energy is essential for Turkey. The company is now directing its engineering experience and software capabilities gained in the aviation field toward the production of safe nuclear energy.
Meanwhile, the Turkish government is preparing a new draft law that will allow private companies to produce nuclear energy. The country aims to use not only large power plants but also more practical small reactors. The advantage of this new generation of reactors is that they can be manufactured in factories and transported, have minimal accident risk, and can be installed in a short time.
