Humane has announced that it has sold most of its assets to HP for $116 million. This acquisition took place on February 18, 2025. Humane is immediately discontinuing sales of its $499 AI Pin devices and will completely shut down their functionality on February 28. Users who have already purchased these devices have been informed that they will stop working after this date and will no longer be able to connect to Humane's servers. The AI Pins will lose all functionality, including calling, messaging, AI queries, and cloud access. Humane is advising users to transfer their important data to other devices as soon as possible.
The company will also shut down its customer support services on February 28. Customers who purchased an AI Pin within the last 90 days will be eligible for a refund, but those who bought it earlier will not receive compensation.
Humane first launched the AI Pin in April 2024, generating significant interest. The device was marketed as a smartphone alternative, and the Bay Area startup raised over $230 million to develop it. However, the AI Pin failed to gain traction in the market and received negative reviews from customers and critics alike.
HP is acquiring Humane’s engineers and product managers to form a new division called HP IQ. This team will focus on AI innovations to build an intelligent ecosystem across HP’s products and services. HP is also acquiring Humane’s CosmOS AI operating system, which was showcased as a technology capable of running on car entertainment systems, smart speakers, TVs, and Android phones. This technology could be integrated into HP’s personal computers and printers in the future.
