OpenAI, the company known for its ChatGPT product, has acquired the chat.com domain for $15.5 million in one of the biggest domain name sales this year.
This domain was first registered in 1996 and purchased by HubSpot CTO Darmesh Shah for $10 million in early 2023. Now OpenAI is its new owner. Analysts believe the move shows OpenAI's intention to strengthen its position in the chatbots and artificial intelligence market.
The information about the purchase of the domain attracted the attention of the public after the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, shared the link on the social network X (Twitter). Darmesh Shah initially explained the reason for acquiring this domain by believing that chat interfaces are the main direction of future technological development. But a few months later, he sold chat.com at a substantial profit.
According to the NameBio database, the deal took place in March 2023 and the domain was sold for $15.5 million, but the seller and buyer did not disclose the details of this transaction for a long time. Currently, chat.com automatically redirects users to the ChatGPT site, but OpenAI has yet to change the name of the product, raising questions about the company's future branding moves.
Experts point out that such a purchase confirms OpenAI's desire to strengthen its position in the field of artificial intelligence and chat platforms, especially in light of the fact that the company has attracted large investments in recent times.
